Scala : Scripting Language based On Java

On Jug-Indonesia, there is a debate rolled by former Jug Administrator : Joshua partogi which talk about ” Is java still relevant ?”. In the middle of conversation i’ve read about scala and the news about twitter move from ruby to scala.

For me basically, this conversation has broadening my choice and also makes me like a dino . Yeah, those people are have great java knowledge.

Anyway, the interesting part was scala. So i try to find out what scala is, and as far as i read on the scala-lang.org scala is about java scripting which in my mind it will reduce the complexity of java itself especially for those people who want immediate result like me . Scala in my mind, it just like beanshell. I don’t know if my opinion is write or wrong, maybe someone could tell me about it.

So after java, scala is the next target.

Saya telah membuat aplikasi Proof Of Concept dari Hibernate + Spring MVC + SiteMesh + Velocity + JQuery. Aplikasi saya ini mengexplore kemampuan hibernate one-to-many, yang ternyata di hibernate bernama many-to-one.

Tampilan Awal Issue Tracker

Aplikasi ini merupakan sebuah issue tracker sederhana yang dapat digunakan untuk memantau issue – issue yang mungkin muncul dalam tugas sehari – hari sebagai IT support ataupun Developer yang ingin setiap langkah yang diambil dapat dilihat secara lebih transparan.

Step Belajar Java Ed. II

Saya telah lama belajar java. Walaupun implementasi masih jauh dari memuaskan. berikut ini adalah apa yang telah saya capai dan apa yang saya pelajari.

1. Aplikasi java web + jdbc

2. Aplikasi java Web + hibernate

3. Aplikasi Java Swing + Jdbc

4. Aplikasi PHP + JavBridge + JasperReport

Step yang saya pelajari :

1. Dasar – dasar java, terutama penulisan dan pembiasaan penulisannya yang case sensitive.

2. JDBC, latihan. Sampai hapal langkah – langkahnya, walau yang sering lupa adalah connection stringnya

3. Hibernate, masih terus belajar. tapi keliatannya sudah bisa digunakan untuk program – program yang ringan.

4. Sedikit Spring Web MVC, masih belum lancar di form validation.

5. JasperReport, lancar.

Web Application Printing Strategy II

On my first write, I told 5 ways about how to add print support to a web application. And this is the 4th way in detail about how to do that.

4. Print Text Using Separate software handler. (Customer MIME Handler)

We can do this by using windows client behaviour that associate file to sort of application. So, this is the steps to do that.

Create data format which will be printed. and what i have done was , adding some binaries character to text data. So I will have “some binary char + som text to print”
Create application which will be associated to data format.The job of the application is print data every time it open or accept any data file. In my case , I have create it using visual basic. I will include the application here next time.
Associate data file with application by open it.
if you using windows, you can easily do that by :
- double clicking the file
- windows will ask what application to use
- then pick the application you’ve created.

After this, the association created between your custom file and custome application will be also valid on web browser. So, when web browser download some dataformat/file that same with your custom data file it will redirect to your custom application and it will print your report.

Hibernate Fool Error : Mistyped URL Connection

I was trying to use hibernate. In The first project i can use hibernate smoothly. But on the second one I get these error which i thought doesn’t make any sense. In my Opinion , Hibernate/JDBC driver Must know if database URI is mistyped.

Here is the error messages

16:40:04,422 INFO DriverManagerConnectionProvider:80 – using driver: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver at URL: jdbc:mysql//localhost:3306/siswatama

16:40:04,423 INFO DriverManagerConnectionProvider:86 – connection properties: {user=report, password=****}

16:40:04,471 WARN SettingsFactory:103 – Could not obtain connection metadata

java.sql.SQLException: No suitable driver found for jdbc:mysql//localhost:3306/siswatama

at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java:602)

at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java:154)

It says that it can not find database Driver, but the fact it already use. And the solution is , I actually Mis the : (double colon).

Web application : Simple log viewer

I need a log viewer to see whats happen on my tomcat. Currently I am using dos console window to see the log that printed out by catalina. And that actually sucks because when i restart the server , i need to loging in to the server to make tomcat run.

Simple Tomcat Web Log viewer

So I make a decision to make tomcat run as service, and will see its log by using a web application. The application itself is simply web application which contain one class act as filereader to tomcat log file. It works like linux tail command. You can specify how many lines that you will show on the log on the index.jsp file. You can download the code here.

Web Application : Print Text using Custom Software Handler (MIME Custom Handler)

Text printing for most business is something that must to do. But in this information age, All computers have windowing graphical system that will slowdown text printing when printing document from it’s printer control panel. Another thing that must consider is, I am web oriented application developer ( maybe you too.. ) that doesn’t have access directly to the client.

So how can i have access to the client ? Simple , In My Opinion a post of Java Indonesia User Group (JUGI) tell that I Must Install a piece software on client it can be either JRE (Java Runtime Environment ) + Java Application, Native Application or Shell Script that can handle any data sent by the browser

So , here is the simple steps to make it happen.

Create Application that will handle certain document sent by the browser. The Application can be written in whatever programming language that you understand.I am using VB6, you can download the source later(I’ll update the post).
Tell Windows what application that will handle the document.

Create Sample text file with different extension that windows doesn't know

Tell windows what application that will open the document that we have create.

What we do is actually add type of file and handle for it. Windows add it to its registry and its MIME type handling. After this step , windows will know what it must do if browser sends a file with *.bxd extension.And because in the program it only open and print, it will happily print the document out.

Web Application Printing Strategy

When I create a web application that will be displayed to the internet I am not consider about document printing. But when I create a web application for business I must have solutions about it. Here is some strategy that I have tested and worked for me.

1. Print HTML Directly from browser
2. Print HTML using javascript activation/button
3. Print Text Directly from browser
4. Print Text Using Separate software handler. (Customer MIME Handler)
5. Print PDF using browser Plugin.

So, those are web printing Strategy that I can do. I will create posts about doing it in step by step especially No. 4 and 5.
